Guest lozza Posted October 12, 2005 Report Posted October 12, 2005 we have a 96 galaxy 2.8 v6. at the moment doing not much to the gall,we did 156 miles and it cost 40 quid...ouch. anyway you can smell fuel on the inside of the car...all fuel line has been checked along with the tank.the smell isnt coming from the front air vents and you cant smell it from the engine.....so any ideas would be helpfull. i thought maybe the engine management might be messed up and its flooding...and if so how do i sort that one out?? many thanks in advance Quote
chromedome Posted October 12, 2005 Report Posted October 12, 2005 Do you have the driver's side window open when you smell the petrol? If so it's more than likely the filler assembly. I think a valve gets stuck open. I had this on my Mk2 Galaxy and a new filler assembly fixed the problem. Quote
Guest lozza Posted October 12, 2005 Report Posted October 12, 2005 no opening the windows brings relief .its worse when all windows are closed. nothing can be smelt on the outside of the car.nor does it leave any fuel or any pipe work wet. it just passed its mot with no probs Quote
Guest marcusheawood Posted October 12, 2005 Report Posted October 12, 2005 ...your V6 certainly sounds excessively thirsty, MAF problems possibly or cold start enrichment fault, check ECU engine temperature sensor assuming the car is warming up properly. Check MAF by disconnecting it, I feel that the fuel smell and the thirst are related. Quote
Guest lozza Posted October 12, 2005 Report Posted October 12, 2005 also just looked is it normal for the tank breather hose to suck.took off the connection in the engine and it just keeps sucking.lt isnt in the fuel as when you blow down it you just hear it clearly in the tank ok dumb moment MAF???? Guest vr6galaxy Posted October 12, 2005 Report Posted October 12, 2005 Where exactly did you find this breather? drivers side tucked up behind the engine? Quote
Guest vr6galaxy Posted October 12, 2005 Report Posted October 12, 2005 It's not one of the hoses off the carbon canister is it? check up behind the wheel arch liner drivers side and see if it has both hoses still connected? Quote
Guest lozza Posted October 12, 2005 Report Posted October 12, 2005 i have followed all the fuel lines up.(three in total) 2 go to the injection assembly and the other one goes into a round canister behind the air filter that clicks. and then dissapers off into little pipes around the engine. the breather im guessing seemed liked it was blocked when i first blew down it...ie like blowing fuel out of it that type of feeling.but perfectly clear now. the carbon canister what is this part of fuel or air assembly? ok now i figured what a maf is  i disconected it with the engine running cant say i noticed anything differant. Guest vr6galaxy Posted October 12, 2005 Report Posted October 12, 2005 the carbon canister what is this part of fuel or air assembly? It's a collector for the fuel vapour/fumes from the fuel tank, the vapour/fumes are collected and held in it till the engine is running and warm, then they are sucked into the inlet manifold and burnt off! the part you have found with all the hose's sounds like the purge valve? Quote
Guest lozza Posted October 12, 2005 Report Posted October 12, 2005 im not to sure.i cant seem to even find a pipe that runs into the driver side wheel arch.but i will have a look tomorrow Quote
Masked Marauder Posted October 12, 2005 Report Posted October 12, 2005 Is there not a known problem with carbon canisters filling up with water? Quote
Guest vr6galaxy Posted October 12, 2005 Report Posted October 12, 2005 Not that I know of, they do help in the blockage of the scuttle drain on that side  you have to remove and remount it slightly higher/lower/to one side? to gain extra clearance to help keep the drain clear! Quote
charles Posted October 13, 2005 Report Posted October 13, 2005 had same fuel smell, which came up when starting at freezing conditions, but disappearing wenn driving a while. Pretty sure that blocking water in the coal canister was the cause. When warm water damps away. Quote
soptom Posted October 13, 2005 Report Posted October 13, 2005 It's not one of the hoses off the carbon canister is it? check up behind the wheel arch liner drivers side and see if it has both hoses still connected? This is exactly what caused my fuel smell problem, take off the wheel arch liner above drivers front wheel, in there is the canister, one of the pipes connecting to it had been dislodged. Hope this helps. Quote
